Livery Yard etiquette

Sharing a yard means sharing space, facilities and sometimes equipment with other people and often cited at the yard managers home. Good yard etiquette helps everyone enjoy a safer and more pleasant environment.

Simple things can make a big difference:

• Keep shared areas tidy and clean up after yourself.
• Return equipment to where you found it.
• Respect other people’s horses, belongings and personal space.
• Follow the yard’s rules for turnout, feeding, mucking out and use of facilities.
• Be considerate when using the school, wash bays and other shared facilities.
• Keep noise and behaviour around horses sensible.
• Ask before handling or feeding someone else’s horse.
• Make sure gates, doors and other security measures are left as you found them.
• Let the yard know about anything that could affect another horse’s welfare or safety.
• Communicate directly and respectfully if there is a problem.
