The University of Liverpool is studying antimicrobial resistance in horses in England and is asking for horse owners to help by submitting poo samples from their horse. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria can result in infections being difficult, or impossible, to treat, but resistant bacteria can be found in healthy animals without causing harm.
The HealthyHorseAMR project is trialling several approaches for sampling horses in the UK and we are now recruiting for our community science study. The project is funded by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate and aims to identify the best method for AMR surveillance in horses, so that we can identify emerging patterns of resistant bacteria before they become a issue.
If you are responsible for horses and live in England, please consider signing up – it’s easy! All we need is some information about your horse, and then we will send out a sampling pack with pre-paid return postage for you to collect a sample of your horse’s poo and return it to our labs.
